Forty
days befores Holy Week, the people of Mazatlán celebrate
Carnival. It is four days of continous celebration, where
the residents "throw the house out of the
window," and happiness is the tone. In a seven-mile
range there will be aover 300,000 people between visitors
and residents alike, all participating in the event.
On Saturday there is a simulated naval combat,
firecrackers and large figurine calle "bad
humor" is burned as a way of purification. Families
go out in the streets and dance for days, following the
parade where musicians play percussion music. "It is
very important to keep your mouth shut, "recommends
Julio Birrueta, a long time resident of Mazatlán,
"otherwise you are likely to swallow flying
confetti." Only one things is not allowed: To be
unhappy. After four days of intense activity and very
little sleep, the populous finally settles down and
attends church on Ash Wednesday.
